Pitstop: tUnE-yArDs
I first found out about tUnE-yArDs when reading an interview with Owen Pallett in Under the Radar magazine in which he stated his fascination with the stylistic name and the reasoning behind it being to get people to just slow down. Such a name certainly made an unforgetable impression on me and I set out to find out more. tUnE-yArDs is the moniker of New England native Merrill Garbus. Her debut album BiRd BrAiNs was released late last year on British 4AD Records but was recorded and produced by Merill Garbus herself. Even though she has a backing band at shows the album was a solo DIY effort made by Garbus with a voice recorder and shareware mixing software. Sometimes sounding RB-ish like Dirty Projectors' "Stillness is A Move" with around-the-world influences like M.I.A. and sometimes not, Garbus' sound is unique and interesting in only good ways.
