Pitstop: Ida Maria
Who says all indie artists have to write sentimental songs with limitless allusions and illumating moral dilemnas? Not Ida Maria. The Norwegian songstress' songs are of a crafty yet fun nature like "Louie" "and "Queen of the World" which are pretty much about partying it up, "Morning Light" about the after-effects, and in "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked", Ida Maria provides the best solution to social/romantic anxiety: Nudity. That's not to say all her songs are about getting drunk or other silly things (though most of them are). Those topics only cover about half the tracks of her debut album Fortress Round My Heart, the others spanning topics from just wanting to be loved, building up emotional walls, and "Stella" in which Ida Maria paints the unlikely scenario of God taking human form and falling in love with a prostitute. You won't find highly intellectual lyrics but then that's not the point. Ida Maria with her slight rasp provides music for enjoyment's sake that still manages to be well-written and well played. Her songs are short, simple, and sweet with a hard rock edge and catchy memorability.
